With this in mind, we are now preparing to transition away from the use of dental amalgam–or silver fillings as they are often known. Embracing this change will be a positive step for you and the planet–let’s take a look at why.
Why the Change?
Though it is typically referred to as silver fillings, dental amalgam is in fact a silver alloy. This alloy includes multiple metal elements, such as tin and copper–but most importantly, liquid mercury. This high mercury content has drawn a lot of concern for both health and environmental reasons. This is in line with a wide range of global initiatives aimed at reducing mercury pollution, across the UK and the EU. Much of this is led by the Minamata Convention on Mercury, a global treaty focusing on reducing mercury pollution.
What the Change Means For You
All of this may sound more than a little worrying if you have existing amalgam fillings. However, there is no cause for concern. Once placed, the amalgam alloy is stable–routine removal is usually unnecessary unless your dentist advises it in specific circumstances. At Smile With Us, moving forward, we will exclusively use modern alternatives to amalgam, like composite resin and ceramic fillings. Providing equally durable results while being mercury free, and blending seamlessly with your natural teeth, these options are a fantastic alternative to amalgam.
